In the kabuki scene depicted here, Danjūrō II is playing the fan seller Kiyoyoshi. The box next to him is labelled as a “ōgi fūryū-ji” (“elegant fan paper”). In a provocative gesture he is threatening his adversary with the geta (wooden sandal) that he has taken off, causing him to draw his sword. But Kiyoshi only uses this trick to find the sword that was stolen from his father.
